There’s not much that Billy Cobham did in the 70′s that I haven’t heard, and immediately became a fan of. You can’t talk about 70′s jazz fusion drumming without spending an hour on Cobham. A drummer for Miles Davis, Mahavishnu Orchestra, Deodato, Ron Carter, and countless others… oh, and he also managed to put out 10 studio albums of his own in just the 70′s alone.
Total Eclipse, his third studio, is comprised of 8 great jazz fusion tracks, all composed and arranged by Cobham himself. It also features one of my favorite jazz guitarists, John Abercrombie. The tracks are diverse, funky at times, and spacey at others. Then there are the times it just shreds in that super pleasing way that only Cobham-driven jazz fusion can.
