Suggested to me in Spotify’s new “Discover Weekly” playlist, I quickly took to the track “Hearing Blue.” This a new feature of Spotify that suggests 30 new tracks to you a week based on your musical tastes. The tracks that it has suggested for me thus far haven’t been stellar. However, this one was was a direct hit.
I’ve only given this album one solid listen through and I can tell it’s going to be in rotation for a while. It blends Americana, Folk, Jazz, Indie Rock and beautiful strings flawlessly into something in a genre of its own, but yet, seems wildly familiar and accessible. The tone is very relaxed to the point of overt whimsy… bordering on tropical at time. The vocals include spot-on impersonations of Paul Simon, soaring falsettos, and raspy, breathy soft harmonies.
The atmosphere, production and instrumentation of this album are what impress me the most. There’s not much fat to be trimmed from this album. Each track flows well into the next and everything seems well-executed.
Not sure how this one’s been flying so lowly under my radar for so long. But I’m sure glad I’ve found it.
