The Whitney Museum bookstore channels the dynamism of the museum itself. Located near the building entry, this highly adaptable freestanding shop offers storage and display for a rotating merchandise assortment, but is nimble enough to be adjusted and moved by a small staff. Our studio designed a suite of graphic ash fixtures and accessories—bookshelves, clothing racks, surface displays, and even custom hangers—that hold a strong presence without competing with the existing building (or the art within it). At the same time, they introduce a kind of soft architecture, creating enclosure without touching the building envelope. This system also honors the museum’s newly introduced six-foot fixture-height guidelines, ensuring that natural light and views of the Hudson River remain unobstructed. Encouraging exploration and bringing in a natural sense of structure to the museum’s open plan, the shop becomes a site of discovery, reflection, and delight.
