Goodside, a pole fitness studio, is a place where movement, music, and community come together. We saw it as an opportunity to give this form of dance a new kind of design treatment: Sexy but calm and inviting, we envisioned it as a place that Grace Jones might spend an evening. The main studio’s 16-foot-ceilings allowed us to design around the tallest dance poles in the city—verticality that we reinforced through a gridded floor. This matrixed design also acts as an orientation device for dancers as they flip and spin, and assists them in squaring up angles for the video content they create on site. Supportive spaces like a lounge, library, and retail area flank the main practice area, providing social access points for visitors when they’re not in session. Across them, we applied tactile finishes—woven, natural fiber rugs, plaster walls, and warm woods—to reinforce a sense of hospitality. On the lower level, we created a moodier and more intimate environment, enveloping the walls in a deep tawny color and providing functional heel storage through wall-mounted railings.

Goodside is a space where movement becomes form — where oak, plaster, and light conspire to create a feeling of grounded power. Designed to honor both the discipline and the sensuality of pole, it stands as a new kind of studio for a new kind of dancer: expressive, unapologetic, and completely at home in their body.
