Asked to expand and update this D.C. rowhouse to better fit the lifestyles of the family that lived there, we created a home that balances historic charm with contemporary expression. We designated the kitchen as a nucleus for activity, opting for quiet and precise millwork with a tambour detail that subtly brings in texture. What appears to be a corner cabinet opens up to reveal a step-in pantry—a stroke of practical magic that optimizes the functionality of an odd corner. A central island anchors the space at a proportion that supports the family’s love of hosting, and a custom, upholstered banquette invites longer, lingering meals. To ensure that the living room could accommodate a crowd of any size, we specified easily reconfigurable, modular furniture that also supports the walkthrough circulation of the space. Views of the backyard are now on full display in these public areas, bringing the home’s indoor and outdoor beauty into a natural conversation.
